Chaos on Mumbai-Pune Expressway as Massive Jam Traps Travellers for Over 30 Hours

A major traffic crisis brought the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to a near standstill, leaving thousands of travellers stranded for more than 30 hours in what many described as a nightmare journey. The usually busy highway, which connects Mumbai with Pune and is a lifeline for daily commuters and long-distance travellers, witnessed one of its worst traffic snarls in recent times.

From early morning till late into the next day, vehicles barely moved across long stretches of the expressway. Cars, buses, trucks and private vehicles were stuck bumper-to-bumper, with some motorists reporting that they had not moved more than a few kilometres in several hours. Families, office-goers, and transport operators were all caught in the massive jam, turning a routine trip into an exhausting ordeal.

One of the biggest challenges faced by stranded commuters was the lack of basic necessities. As the hours dragged on, many people ran out of drinking water and food. Shops and fuel stations along the route were either too far away or unreachable due to the standstill traffic. Parents with children, elderly passengers, and people with health issues were among the worst affected, struggling to cope in the heat and congestion.

Several travellers took to social media to share their frustration, posting images and videos of endless lines of vehicles and appealing for help. Many said they were stuck overnight in their cars and buses, with no clear information on when the traffic would ease. Some drivers even stepped out of their vehicles to stretch, talk to others, or search for water, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

According to officials, the traffic chaos was triggered by a combination of factors, including heavy vehicle movement, possible roadwork-related bottlenecks, and a surge in holiday or weekend travel. Once congestion built up at key choke points, the situation quickly spiralled out of control, leading to long queues that stretched for several kilometres.

Traffic police and highway authorities were deployed to manage the situation and clear the jam. Efforts were made to regulate the movement of heavy vehicles and improve the flow at critical sections of the expressway. However, due to the sheer volume of traffic and the length of the backlog, normal movement took a long time to resume.

The incident has once again raised questions about traffic management, infrastructure capacity, and emergency preparedness on one of India’s busiest expressways. Regular commuters say such massive jams are becoming more frequent, especially during peak travel seasons, long weekends, and festival periods. Many are calling for better planning, quicker response systems, and clearer communication to avoid similar situations in the future.

By the time traffic slowly started moving again, many travellers had already lost an entire day on the road. What should have been a smooth journey between Mumbai and Pune turned into a stressful and exhausting experience, leaving commuters hoping that steps will be taken to prevent a repeat of this 30-hour traffic nightmare.
