India to Leverage AI for Job Growth and Better Public Services, Says MeitY Secretary

India is preparing to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create new employment opportunities and strengthen public service delivery, according to MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan. Speaking about the country’s digital future, he emphasized that AI is not just a technological trend but a transformative force that can reshape governance, industry, and the workforce.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has been actively promoting AI-driven innovation across sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing, and public administration. The Secretary highlighted that India’s large digital ecosystem, growing startup culture, and strong IT talent pool provide a solid foundation for building AI-based solutions tailored to the country’s needs.

One of the key focus areas is job creation. While AI is often seen as a disruptor, officials believe it will also generate new categories of employment in areas such as data analysis, machine learning development, cybersecurity, AI ethics, and digital infrastructure management. Upskilling and reskilling initiatives are expected to play a major role in preparing India’s workforce for these emerging roles. The government is encouraging collaboration between industry, academic institutions, and startups to ensure that AI adoption leads to inclusive growth rather than job displacement.

In governance, AI is being viewed as a powerful tool to enhance efficiency, transparency, and citizen services. From automating routine administrative processes to improving decision-making through data insights, AI can help governments deliver faster and more accurate services. Smart grievance redressal systems, predictive analytics for policy planning, and AI-driven monitoring of public welfare schemes are among the areas being explored.

The MeitY Secretary also pointed out that responsible and ethical use of AI remains a top priority. Ensuring data privacy, fairness, and accountability in AI systems is essential to build public trust. India is working toward creating frameworks and guidelines that balance innovation with safeguards, allowing technology to advance without compromising citizens’ rights.

India’s push for AI aligns with its broader vision of becoming a global technology leader. With initiatives supporting research, domestic chip manufacturing, digital public infrastructure, and startup innovation, the country aims to create a strong ecosystem that supports both economic growth and social development.

Experts believe that if implemented strategically, AI can significantly improve productivity, expand access to public services in rural and urban areas alike, and open new avenues for entrepreneurship. By leveraging AI responsibly, India hopes to drive sustainable job growth while building a more responsive and citizen-centric governance model.

As the digital economy continues to evolve, the government’s focus on AI signals a clear commitment to shaping the future of work and public services through innovation and technology-driven reforms.
