India to Sign Mega Defence Pact for 114 Rafale Jets Worth ₹3.25 Lakh Crore

India is set to sign one of its largest-ever defence agreements, with plans to acquire 114 Rafale fighter jets in a mega deal valued at around ₹3.25 lakh crore. The landmark pact is expected to significantly enhance India’s air combat strength and marks a major milestone in the modernisation of the Indian Air Force.

The proposed agreement will expand India’s existing fleet of Rafale aircraft, which are considered among the most advanced multirole fighter jets globally. Manufactured by French aerospace company Dassault Aviation, the Rafale is known for its advanced radar systems, superior avionics, long-range strike capability, and versatility across air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

Defence officials indicate that the deal is aimed at addressing the Indian Air Force’s long-standing shortage of fighter aircraft as several older jets near retirement. With evolving regional security challenges, the induction of 114 new Rafale jets is expected to significantly strengthen India’s operational readiness, surveillance capacity, and deterrence posture.

A key highlight of the mega defence pact is its strong emphasis on indigenous production and technology transfer. A substantial part of the manufacturing and assembly process is expected to take place in India under the government’s Make in India initiative. This is likely to create thousands of skilled jobs, boost the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, and improve self-reliance in high-end military technology.

The deal is also expected to include comprehensive maintenance support, training for pilots and ground staff, advanced weapons packages, and long-term logistics arrangements to ensure high availability and combat readiness of the aircraft fleet. Defence experts believe this will provide the Indian Air Force with a sustained technological edge for decades.

Strategically, the Rafale acquisition is seen as a major step in strengthening India’s defence partnerships and reinforcing national security. While the financial size of the deal is significant, the government maintains that the investment is essential to maintain air superiority and protect the country’s interests in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.

Once finalised, the Rafale fighter jet deal will rank among the biggest arms purchases in India’s history, reshaping the future of the country’s air power and underlining its commitment to a strong and modern defence force.
