India–US Healthcare Collaboration Holds Vast Promise, Says Dr. Naresh Trehan

New York, December 11, 2025 — India and the United States share significant potential for collaboration in the healthcare sector, spanning advanced technologies, drug development and diagnostic innovation, according to world-renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Consulate General of India in New York titled “Healthcare in a Developed India 2047,” Dr. Trehan — Chairman and Managing Director of Medanta and a Padma Bhushan awardee — highlighted how both nations can join forces to address emerging health challenges and unlock new opportunities for growth.

India and the United States have huge potential for collaboration in healthcare, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), technology, drug development, medical hardware and medical tourism, said world-renowned surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan.

Focus Areas for Collaboration

Dr. Trehan pointed to several key areas where India and the US can deepen cooperation:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Technology: With AI algorithms now capable of analyzing vast datasets quickly, Trehan said there is enormous scope to use AI for healthcare delivery and predictive diagnostics — areas where the US’s technological leadership complements India’s large IT talent base.
  • Drug Development: India’s diverse gene pool gives it a unique edge in accelerating drug research and personalized medicine, especially when paired with US expertise and resources.
  • Medical Hardware and Research: Collaboration can help bring advanced medical equipment and research initiatives to fruition more rapidly, benefiting global healthcare outcomes.
  • Medical Tourism: India’s expanding healthcare infrastructure and cost effectiveness make it an attractive destination for medical tourism — a sector ripe for joint ventures and shared standards.

A Timely Call to Action

“We are now in a stage where I think the time has come… it’s India’s time,” Dr. Trehan said during his address. He urged stakeholders and investors to act promptly, noting that opportunities are immense and should not be delayed.

Vision for 2047

The New York event underscored India’s commitment to ensuring universal, high-quality healthcare access and building a robust healthcare workforce. Organizers highlighted the country’s rising cadre of skilled medical professionals, the transformative influence of AI in diagnostics and delivery systems, and India’s emerging leadership across the pharmaceutical and med-tech sectors.

As India progresses toward its ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) vision by 2047, Dr. Trehan emphasized that enhanced partnerships with global leaders like the United States will play a critical role in shaping the future of healthcare innovation and delivery.
