Loco Trains Collide Inside Hydropower Tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli, Many Injured

The collision of two loco trains inside a hydropower project tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has triggered serious concerns about safety at large infrastructure sites in the Himalayan region. The accident occurred during ongoing construction work, where narrow-gauge locomotive trains are commonly used to move workers, equipment and construction material through long underground tunnels.

Eyewitnesses said the impact inside the tunnel led to chaos, with workers struggling to move in the confined space filled with dust and debris. Many suffered injuries due to the sudden jolt and crowding, while others were hurt while trying to escape the area. Rescue teams, along with project staff, quickly entered the tunnel to assist those trapped or injured.

Health officials confirmed that dozens of injured workers were shifted to hospitals in Pipalkoti, Joshimath and nearby areas for treatment. While most injuries were reported to be minor to moderate, some workers required advanced medical care and were referred to larger hospitals. Authorities said all necessary medical facilities were placed on standby following the incident.

District administration officials and senior police officers reached the site to supervise rescue and relief operations. The tunnel was temporarily sealed to ensure safety and to allow a detailed inspection. Power supply and construction activity at the site were also halted as a precautionary measure.

An investigation has been launched to identify the cause of the collision. Officials are examining whether factors such as signaling failure, poor visibility, human error or communication lapses played a role. Safety logs, train movement schedules and equipment condition are being reviewed as part of the probe.

The accident has highlighted the risks faced by workers involved in high-altitude hydropower and infrastructure projects, where harsh terrain and challenging working conditions add to operational hazards. Experts have stressed the need for stricter safety monitoring, better training, and improved tunnel management systems to avoid similar incidents.

Authorities have assured that compensation and support will be provided to the injured workers and their families. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and more details emerge from the site.
