IIT Hyderabad announces global PhD intake under fully funded FIRST Fellowship

One of India’s fastest-growing technology institutes, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), is expanding its global outreach. The institute has introduced a fully funded doctoral programme for international students – an initiative that focuses as much on fostering talent and ideas as it does on policy goals and academic rankings. Known as the FIRST Fellowship, the programme seeks to attract bright minds from around the world into India’s evolving research landscape.

Established in 2008, IITH has rapidly grown from a new entrant to a well-recognised name in higher education. It has consistently ranked among India’s top institutions in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and is known for its emphasis on innovation-driven learning. Beyond rankings, the institute aims to cultivate an environment where research is not only conducted but deeply integrated into everyday academic life.

What the fellowship offers to students

At its core, the FIRST Fellowship is designed to remove financial barriers so that scholars can focus entirely on their research journey.

  • A monthly stipend of ₹60,000
  • Annual research support of ₹1,00,000
  • Full funding for four years
  • No application fee

For many aspiring researchers, especially those coming from abroad, this kind of support can make the difference between an idea remaining on paper and it being explored in a lab.

Who can apply

The programme is intentionally selective. It is open exclusively to foreign nationals – excluding OCI and NRI candidates – and is aimed at applicants who have already demonstrated strong academic potential.

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in engineering or technology with a minimum CGPA of 8.5 or its equivalent, and both their undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications must be from institutions outside India. Applicants with prior research experience, such as publications or patents, may have an added advantage.

A campus that inspires curiosity and innovation

What sets the programme apart is not just its funding, but the breadth of disciplines it covers. From Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change to Liberal Arts and Entrepreneurship, the fellowship reflects IITH’s belief that true innovation often emerges at the intersection of fields.

This blend of engineering rigour and creative thinking is what the institute hopes will attract students eager to tackle real-world challenges – whether in sustainability, healthcare, or digital technologies.

Established on a foundation of research excellence

Behind this initiative is an institution that has consistently invested in research. With over $160 million in funding, thousands of publications, hundreds of patents, and an expanding network of collaborations, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad has steadily built a strong and credible research ecosystem.

Nearly one-third of its student population comprises PhD scholars, reflecting that the campus is as much focused on discovery and innovation as it is on teaching.

How to apply

The application process is simple but structured:

  • Complete the official application form
  • Submit academic documents along with a reference letter
  • Email the full application using the specified subject line

The deadline is April 30, 2026 (5:00 PM IST), and the institute has emphasised that timelines will be strictly enforced.

More than just a fellowship

At a time when universities worldwide are competing for top research talent, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad’s initiative comes across as both timely and strategic. It is not merely providing funding – it is offering a place within an evolving academic journey.

By welcoming international scholars, the institute is not only broadening its own horizons but also contributing to a larger vision – one where cross-border collaboration fuels the next wave of innovation.
