Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi is likely to visit India this week to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, taking place amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting is being seen as a precursor to the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi this September, where leaders of major emerging economies are expected to gather against the backdrop of increasing geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty.
Since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict on February 18, Seyed Abbas Araghchi has held at least four conversations with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss the escalating situation in West Asia and wider geopolitical developments.
During the discussions, Seyed Abbas Araghchi updated External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the rapidly evolving situation following what Tehran termed US and Israeli strikes, cautioning that the developments could have serious implications for regional as well as global stability.
He also stressed the need for stronger coordination among BRICS nations to support international stability and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to exercising what it described as its “legitimate right to self-defense.”
Araghchi last traveled to India in May 2025 for a two-day official visit to co-chair the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting, his first trip to the country since taking office in August 2024.
Held on May 7 and 8, the meeting marked the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty and focused on reviewing major bilateral issues while also exploring avenues to enhance political, economic, and strategic cooperation between the two nations.
During the visit, Seyed Abbas Araghchi held bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and also paid a courtesy call on President Droupadi Murmu.
