Delhi Police Warns Against Fake Traffic Challan Messages With Malware Links!

The Delhi Police has issued a fresh warning to citizens after a spike in fake traffic challan messages being circulated through SMS and WhatsApp. These fraudulent messages urge recipients to click on a link or download an attachment titled “RTO CHALLAN.apk”, claiming that a traffic fine is pending and needs immediate payment.

Officials confirmed that these messages are part of a phishing scam designed to install malware on people’s phones. Once the malicious file is downloaded, cybercriminals can gain remote access to the device, steal sensitive data, and in many cases, drain the user’s bank account.

How the Scam Targets Victims?

According to Delhi Police’s Cyber Cell, scammers are using tactics that create a sense of urgency. The message often reads like an official challan notification and provides a clickable link to “view” or “pay” the fine.

However, instead of showing challan details, the link delivers malware capable of:

  • Accessing banking apps
  • Stealing passwords and OTPs
  • Reading personal messages
  • Monitoring screen activity
  • Taking full control of the phone

Officials warned that these fraudulent apps are visually similar to legitimate traffic challan platforms, making it easy to fool unsuspecting users.

Police Clarify: Govt Does NOT Send Payment Links via Messages

The Delhi Police has made it clear that:

  • No government department sends challan payment links through SMS or WhatsApp.
  • No apk file or app is ever sent for challan verification.
  • Legitimate challans can only be checked on official websites such as the Delhi Traffic Police portal or the Parivahan Sewa website.

Citizens are urged to avoid clicking any unsolicited link and to delete such messages immediately.

Public Urged to Stay Alert:

Authorities have advised people to report such messages to the national cybercrime helpline 1930 and file complaints at cybercrime.gov.in.

Cyber experts also recommend:

  • Never downloading apk files from unknown sources
  • Updating phone security settings
  • Avoiding sharing banking details over phone or text
  • Using official apps or sites only for payments

A Growing Cyber Threat:

Delhi Police has noted a sharp increase in cyber frauds using government-themed scams. Criminals are taking advantage of the general public’s lack of awareness around digital safety, especially when it comes to official-looking messages.

With the growing number of such cases, officials stressed the need for stronger digital hygiene and personal vigilance.
