Akot BJP-AIMIM alliance collapses within hours after CM Fadnavis’ warning; MLA issued show-cause notice, political uncertainty deepens

In a major political embarrassment for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Akot town of Akola district, the newly formed alliance between the BJP and AIMIM collapsed within a few hours on Wednesday after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued a strong public warning against such tie-ups.

The BJP had emerged as the single largest party in the 35-member Akot municipal council but fell short of the numbers required to form the council on its own. In an attempt to secure power, a broad and unusual coalition named “Akot Nagar Vikas Manch” was formed. This front included BJP, AIMIM, both factions of Shiv Sena, NCP, Congress and Prahar Janshakti Party.

The alliance, however, immediately sparked controversy due to the inclusion of AIMIM and Congress. Reacting sharply, CM Fadnavis made it clear that the BJP would not tolerate any understanding or power-sharing arrangement with AIMIM or Congress at any level. He also warned party leaders of strict disciplinary action if such decisions were taken without the approval of the central or state leadership.

Soon after the Chief Minister’s statement, the BJP’s state leadership moved quickly to contain the damage and issued a show-cause notice to Akot MLA Prakash Bharsakale, seeking an explanation for supporting the alliance without consulting senior party leaders.

The political pressure had an immediate impact. AIMIM withdrew its support from the coalition and pulled out its councillors, leading to the collapse of the alliance even before it could properly take shape. With AIMIM’s exit, the entire front lost its majority and the council formation process was thrown into uncertainty.

The sudden rise and fall of the alliance has created fresh political instability in Akot, with no clear picture yet on who will form the municipal leadership. Political observers see this episode as a clear message from the BJP’s top leadership that local leaders cannot take independent political calls that go against the party’s broader ideological and strategic line.

The incident has also reignited debates around opportunistic alliances in civic politics and the challenges faced by parties in managing local power equations while maintaining their state-level and national political positions.
